Due to the snow, the following cancellations and closures are in effect for Tuesday, Jan. 17:

City Hall is open.
The City Council meeting has been cancelled.
All classes and programs at Spartan Recreation Center have been cancelled.
Spartan Recreation Center will close at 5:00 p.m.
Afternoon and evening classes and programs at Shoreline Pool have been cancelled.
Shoreline Pool will close at 5:00 p.m.
The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association meeting and the public meeting with the Shoreline Parks Department discussing Echo Lake have been cancelled.
All programs at the Richmond Highlands Recreation Center are cancelled and the facility is closed.

upgraded - and finally it is our turn.

Please join us this Tuesday, October 18, 2011 from 7-9pm at Shoreline
City Hall in the City Council Chambers as we meet with Maureen
Colaizzi, Parks Project Coordinator, to let her know what we want from
our park.

A picnic shelter?
A level playing field?

Maybe a rock wall you could sit on by the lake - or more shoreline?
Definitely a nicer restroom.

A water fountain for people and dogs?

Let your imagination go.

Our wall mural at 1st NE and NE 205th is old and tired. We have loved
it for years, but now it's time to let it go.
Is there someone who would like to be the coordinator to shepherd the
process of getting a replacement mural? There will be a lot of help -
but we need someone from the neighborhood to be in charge.

New Recycle Fest Event coming soon

In order to provide new opportunities for residents to recycle, the City is updating the annual Clean Sweep events with a new name and a new focus. At Recycle Fest, you will be able to recycle items that don’t normally go in your recycle bin. Bring the Styrofoam you have been saving, as well as the bicycle that your children out-grew many years ago. If you recently remodeled your home, you will be able to bring that old toilet, carpet and roofing material to recycle.
Recycle Fest will be free for all Shoreline residents. Proof of residency will be required. Note that only pick-up trucks or smaller vehicles will be allowed to enter. If you are hauling items on behalf of a neighbor or want to bring a trailer, call (206) 801-2455 for approval prior to the event. Garbage and yard waste will not be accepted. Check the event flyer coming in the mail for acceptable items.
Recycle Fest is sponsored in cooperation with the King County Solid Waste Division, the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County and the Washington State Department of Ecology. For more information, contact the Shoreline Customer Response Team at (206) 801-2700.

Shoreline Community College has a plan to cut nearly $3.1 million from the 2011-12 budget.

At an all-campus meeting on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, Shoreline President Lee Lambert labeled the plan a “final draft plan” that includes some impacts to 36 positions. Of that number, 11 faculty members are identified for reduction-in-force proceedings along with two retirements and two contract non-renewals. Three administrators would be laid off, two positions are being downgraded, one vacant position eliminated, one reduced time and one shifted to non-state funds. For classified employees, there were no layoffs, but seven vacant positions are slated for elimination, four reduced time and one retirement.

If you care about the potential impacts from Point Wells redevelopment on the quality of life in our neighborhood, THESE ARE MEETINGS AND HEARINGS WHERE YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Below is a list of public meetings that represent the initial steps toward real action on Point Wells redevelopment. 1) PUBLIC HEARING

PROPOSED PLAN CHANGE FOR RICHMOND BEACH DRIVE

The City of Shoreline has listened to the concerns about traffic and safety in our neighborhood and is taking action. They have proposed an amendment to the City's comprehensive plan for the Point Wells subarea which would limit traffic on Richmond Beach Drive. For details see:

The City is encouraging interested persons to provide oral and/or written comments at an open record public hearing.

If you agree that traffic on Richmond Beach Drive should be limited because it is a narrow, dead-end street with no sidewalks and is not appropriate for large volumes of traffic write a letter supporting the proposed change.

This may be your only opportunity to submit written comments, including comments on the environmental impacts of the proposal. Written comments must be received at the address listed below before 5:00 p.m. on January 19, 2011. Please mail, fax (206) 801-2788 or deliver comments to the City of Shoreline, Attn: Steven Szafran, AICP 17500 Midvale Avenue North, Shoreline, WA 98133 or email to sszafran@shorelinewa.gov.

You can also make your comments in person at the public hearing.

This hearing will address one of the big issues with Point Wells:
How can the developer use such a narrow, local road as the only entrance to new development with an estimated 3,500 dwellings and 100,000 sq. ft. commercial space?
At this time the answer is: There is currently no restriction on the use of the road to Point Wells through the Richmond Beach corridor (the corridor includes the entire length of road connecting the gate at Point Wells to Aurora). While it is true Richmond Beach Road has four lanes in some sections, the last segment of the corridor before the entrance to Point Wells, Richmond Beach Drive, is a narrow, two-lane road. The City is looking at changing the classification of this street. In doing so they may also control the amount of traffic allowed into or out of Point Wells. This change has the potential to reduce the amount of traffic allowed on this street by half. Come see what the Shoreline Planning Commission has to say and tell them what you think about the City's proposal to reclassify Richmond Beach Drive from a "collector arterial" to a "neighborhood local" road.

FIRST STEP TOWARD DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION

The Developer has stated that at this meeting they will reveal what they intend to build. The upcoming Neighborhood Meeting by the developer is a formal requirement toward an application to build at Point Wells. This will be your first opportunity to see what they have in mind.

Seating begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Auditorium, with presentations by key members of the developer's project team starting at 6:30.

A moderator will facilitate a question and answer session to follow, with written questions submitted by the public at the event or in advance at www.pointwells.com/contact-us. The written comments will be summarized and included in the application submittal to Snohomish County. Currently, SnoCo holds sole authority to grant permission to the developer to build at Point Wells.

This meeting is part of the formal process to get a building permit. Just what will the owner propose for master site plan application to Snohomish County? Such an application is sought for permission to develop a property based on conceptual parameters of land use, density, and utilization of adjacent services, to name a few.

BSRE has stated that their presentations will include: preliminary conceptual layout and design; the proposed mix of land uses; proposed building heights and floor area ratio; and public open space and access considerations. Presentations will also include conceptual landscape and habitat restoration plans; planned remediation of the site; conceptual sustainability features; public use features and amenities planned; traffic analyses planning to date and proposed transit features.

The merits of the Appeal to the Urban Center Designation by Shoreline, Woodway, and Save Richmond Beach are being considered by the Growth Management Hearings Board as we write. Basically, this effort represents probably one of the last straws of hope that we in Shoreline may control this project locally, by pointing out the many difficulties with SnoCo's decision to allow the scale of development associated with an Urban Center at Point Wells. If it gets down to this appeal, we can use all hands on deck at the hearings to help get the point across – POINT WELLS IS A CUL-DE-SAC, NOT A TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT (TOD). Feel free to Google the latter for a clear definition of what seems intended by SnoCo's Urban Center code.

Please come to these meetings and/or write to your local officials by the deadlines (see the City website for details), to make the difference only you can.

The latest Shorecrest/Shorewood competion: "The Social Experiment"

Shoreline School District video production teachers, Trent Mitchell
from Shorecrest and Marty Ballew from Shorewood, who brought us the
famous lip dub videos a year ago, are back with a new competition. In
"The Social Experiment," participating students from both schools will
be expected to give up their social networks for a week—no texting,
cell phones, Facebook, etc., between Monday, December 6 and Saturday,
December 11.

They're anticipating over 200 students who will participate. Check out

Registration for Shoreline Goodwill's FREE classes begins Dec. 13!

Students can learn valuable skills in computers, cashiering and English

Shoreline Goodwill's Job Training and Education Center, located at 14500 15^th Avenue NE, will register people beginning Dec. 13 for free classes in the eight-week session that runs from Jan. 3 through Feb. 24, 2011.

To satisfy demand among people in the community, the center has added additional classes in basic computers and English. Even still, staff expects classes to fill up fast and reminds prospective students that sign up is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The center will register students on the following days:

All computer classes: Dec. 13 and 14; 10 a.m.
Cashiering class: Dec. 20 and 21; 11 a.m.
All English classes: Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. (it is possible to register for English classes outside of these times. Contact the center directly for more information).

The center will offer the following classes:

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) – These include basic and intermediate courses designed to accommodate a wide range of English skills.

o Level 1: Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

o Level 2: Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

o Level 3: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Basic Computer Classes – Introductory courses for people with little or no computer experience.

o Computer Fundamentals: Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Work Party at Ronald Bog Park this Saturday

November is here along with heavier rain. The resident beaver has made
itself known again by falling a couple alder. We continue to wrap
fencing around our trees and have not lost one of them in two years.
Our hope is that Sat. 11/6/10 will be a little drier for our work
party from 9 to noon. We'll meet near the pony statues along N. 175th.
There is limited parking in the lot just east of the statues so we
encourage parking along Meridian. We'll continue to remove
blackberries, dig roots and plant native plants. We'll have some tools
and gloves but bring your favorites and join our party. Dress
appropriately for the weather. Hope to see you on Saturday.

Richmond Beach Off-Leash Area Opens Nov 1st

A note from ShoreDog:

Just a reminder that Richmond Beach off-leash area is opening November
1st. Like last year, the off-leash area is at the south end of
Richmond Beach. Please keep in mind that dogs must be on leash until
within the signed area of the beach. This year, enforcement of the
leash law outside both off-leash areas will be emphasized and
citations will be issued.

ShoreDog is a Washington State non-profit organization that supports
the creation of dog off-leash areas within Shoreline. As citizen
stewards supporting the Parks Department, ShoreDog is vital to the
success of our two sites, Shoreview Off-Leash Park and Richmond Beach
Saltwater Park.

Halloween Carnival sponsored by The Richmond Beach Community Association

When: Saturday, October 30, 2010 from 3-7pm

RBCA's annual Halloween Carnival features traditional carnival games with prizes, inflatables, a haunted house, a raffle and food. As far as old-fashioned carnivals go, this one is truly exceptional and prices are family friendly. Children and parents are encouraged to wear costumes. Because parking is limited, please walk or carpool if possible.

planting of native plants.

We had Daisy Brownies Troop 4001 and parents, Shorewood High School
students as well as our core volunteers Ron Post and Terry Roche for a
total of 12 hardy souls dig blackberry roots and plant Sword fern,

Get involved in the City of Shoreline's Parks, Recreation and Open
Space (PROS) 2011 Long-Range Planning Process.

The PROS Plan is a long-range planning document required by the State
of WA to be updated every six years. It articulates our community's
long-term vision for our parks, recreation and open spaces and
qualifies the City to apply for state and federal grants.

Based on community input during a series of meetings this fall, in
Jan. 2011, the PRCS Board will make recommendations for long-term PROS
Plan priorities. In April/May 2011, the City Council will review the
draft PROS Plan and then in June 2011, City Council will adopt the
final plan.

To learn more about the PROS Plan, provide input on what our community
parks and recreation priorities should be, and ensure that our
community vision for Sunset/ Boeing Creek Open Space is included in
the City's long-range plan:

Registration for Shoreline Goodwill's FREE classes begins Oct. 4th

Students can learn valuable skills in retail, computers and English

Shoreline Goodwill's Job Training and Education Center, located at 14500 15^th Avenue NE, will register people on Oct. 4-15 for free classes in the eight-week session that runs from Oct. 18 through Dec. 9, 2010.

The center will continue to offer a variety of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes this session. These include basic and intermediate courses designed to accommodate a wide range of English skills. There will also be an ESOL Computers course to help people with limited English skills begin to acquire computer skills immediately.

Classes fill up fast, and sign up is on a first-come, first-served basis, so don't delay!

The center will also offer the following classes:

Retail and Customer Service Training Program: This 10-week class teaches students skills necessary to get jobs in the retail and customer service sectors. It consists of eight weeks of class time with two weeks of on-the-job training at a Goodwill store.

Basic Computer Classes: Introductory courses for people with little or no computer experience.

Aurora Corridor project to begin second mile of construction

Starting in November, construction will be taking place on the stretch of Highway 99 between 165th and 185th.

This will mean reduced lanes and heavier traffic at times, but the city has taken steps to try to shorten the time needed to complete the construction and minimize the impact on traffic and businesses.

Student Essay Contest

The Washington Generals annual essay contest focuses on the 1909 World’s Fair in Seattle.

Did the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Washington’s first World’s Fair which concluded in Seattle 100 years ago after a run of nearly five months, change Washington state history? A service organization called the Association of Washington Generals is asking for perspectives to that question in their annual essay contest, which is now open to students enrolled in grades 7 to 12.

The association sponsors the annual essay contest to promote academic excellence and strong literacy skills. This year’s contest asks students to write a detailed essay answering the question: “2009 is the 100th anniversary of the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition. How important was the relationship with Alaska to the history of the state of Washington?”

There is no length requirement, but participants are asked to be descriptive in conveying their individual thoughts and ideas and focus on the issues that are the most important to them. A study aid on the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition, which drew more than 3 million visitors to the University of Washington campus, can be found on the HistoryLink.org Web site.

Winners in the grades 7-9 and 9-11 categories each receive $500, and the winning senior earns a higher education scholarship of $1,500. The overall statewide winner from all categories is awarded an additional $500. Runners-up in each category also receive cash awards and the teacher or advisor who submits the most student essays will receive $250. Winners will also receive a plaque at an awards ceremony at their school.

Local planning course talks about land use

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, the City of Shoreline will be having a Short Course on Local Planning, a three-hour public workshop. According to the city website, the course will cover "...the legal basis of planning in Washington State, explains the basics of comprehensive planning and plan implementation, discusses the role of the planning commission, the city council and city staff and how the public can be effectively involved in local planning."

There will also be an update on innovative land use techniques such as form-based codes, subarea plans and design guidelines.

The Short Course is co-sponsored by the Washington State Department of Commerce, the Washington Cities Insurance Authority, and the Planning Association of Washington. It will be held in the City Council Chambers of the new Shoreline City Hall, at 17500 Midvale Avenue N, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The workshop is open to the public and there is no charge to attend.

Around the Sound community band

Do you play an instrument, and wish you had some folks to jam with? Did you play once, long ago, and want to get your skills back up? Or do you just enjoy happy brass band music? You may want to check out the Around the Sound community band here in Shoreline.

Since 1999, members of the Around the Sound band have been meeting to practice and play concerts in the area. They’ve played the North City Tree Lighting ceremony, holiday concerts at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, and at retirement homes, civic celebrations, and parades, and you'll be able to see them performing at the Shoreline City Hall opening coming up on October 10th.

And if you want to play in the band, you'll find it's open to all adults, no audition needed. The band is headed by Michael Alstead, Executive Director of Music Center of the Northwest, who has been playing the trumpet for over 40 years.

Shoreline stand-off

By now, you've probably heard about the police stand-off that occurred overnight in Shoreline. According to news reports, it started around six in the evening, when a man in a house near 150th and Densmore was reported to be threatening family members and friends with knives. He barricaded himself in the home when police contacted him, and when officers tried to enter the house, fired a shot.

Ready Neighborhood - Map Your Neighborhood!

The City of Shoreline encourages you to coordinate with your immediate neighbors - within a block - to get “ready” so you can help each other during a disaster.

One of the City’s goals is to get neighborhoods prepared as a Ready Neighborhood – ready in case of emergency or natural disaster. To accomplish readiness they use a tool called Map Your Neighborhood. The State of Washington Department of Emergency Management created this “mapping” tool to have a consistent way of preparing neighborhoods across the state.

Map Your Neighborhood is a 90 minute meeting in which neighbors on a block come together to:

 Learn the 9 steps to take immediately following a disaster
 Develop an “inventory” of neighborhood skills and equipment e.g. who’s a nurse, who owns a chain saw
 Map the neighborhood and identify areas of concern such as locations of gas meters
 Verify which neighbors need extra help in a disaster such as the elderly, those with a disability, or children who may be home alone.

An instruction booklet is available to lead you through the mapping tool, or the City has trained volunteers to help lead the meeting.

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council Launches 2009-10 Readers’ Theater Season

It’s time to mark your calendars for the 2009-10 Readers’ Theater season, where actors read new local plays and the audience weighs in afterwards. The series is now in its ninth year.

This season offers something for everyone. Topics range from cell phone addiction to Flower Children, from unemployment to the TV rumor mill. In a true story, one woman explores her struggle with chronic illness.

The lineup includes plays by regional authors Stefani Priest, Cheryl Victoria Richardson, Nicola Pearson, John Ruoff, Leonard Goodisman and George Savage Jr.

All readings are 7 p.m. Monday nights at Shoreline Center and are free. After the show, audience members share ideas on the script with the playwright and enjoy cookies and coffee. The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council sponsors the series.

“One Woman with Multiple Sclerosis” by Cheryl Victoria Richardson
“The Messenger” by Nicola Pearson

In “One Woman with Multiple Sclerosis,” Richardson uses poetry, improvisation, dance and music to present her personal battle with multiple sclerosis. Her work shows the strength and hope of a young woman who refuses to let disease get the best of her.

In “The Messenger,” a talk-show host mentions casually that his answering machine is sending messages from God about a coming disaster. The play examines the power of TV to create controversy.

“An Anonymous Legend,” by John Ruoff
Ruoff’s play transports the audience back to the hippie era, as a group of Flower Children are re-united when one of them gets out of rehab.

Shoreline’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
The City of Shoreline and the Shoreline Fire Department jointly offer advanced community education so individuals will be better prepared to help themselves and those around them when a disaster occurs.

Offered once or twice a year, the CERT class is 21 hours of training focused on disaster preparedness for specific hazards that may impact the Shoreline area. It includes training in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. CERT members can then use their training to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. In addition to the CERT baseline training, those who have completed the class are given the opportunity to become a Registered Emergency Disaster Worker as a member of the Shoreline Community Emergency Response Team. Members are offered additional on-going training and can be called upon to support the City’s efforts during an emergency with activities like shelter operations, sandbagging, distribution of public information and support of the Emergency Operations Center. The team meets periodically to plan for training and events and are organized as a non-profit organization.
The next Shoreline CERT class will be Tuesdays and Thursday, 6:30-9:30 pm, September 22, 24, 29, October 1, 6 and 8. Classes are taught at Shoreline Fire Department Training Center at 17525 Aurora Ave N.

The Seattle Humane Society provides pet food to thousands of low-income seniors and people disabled by AIDS. While all donations will be accepted, the greatest need is for dry cat food. They also ask that we avoid pouches of wet food or soft pack items as they break open easily in storage.

In an emergency, we all know to call 9-1-1. But in a disaster, our city’s first responders will be overwhelmed with requests for help. Your actual first responders will most likely be your family members and your neighbors. After a disaster such as an earthquake, your neighborhood may have gas lines leaking, live electrical wires down, trees fallen on houses, a neighbor with disabilities may need help . . . and 9-1-1 phones are jammed or dead. How you respond within the first hour after a disaster can significantly reduce injury, loss of life, and property damage.

Are you ready?
Become a Ready Neighborhood using the “Map Your Neighborhood” (MYN) tool. MYN is a program designed to help neighbors prepare together for disasters.
MYN will help you to:
• Learn the “9 Steps to Take Immediately Following a Disaster” to secure your home and to protect your neighborhood. It is hard to think clearly following disaster and these steps will help you to quickly and safely take actions that can minimize damage and protect lives.
• Identify the Skills and Equipment each neighbor has that would be useful in an effective disaster response. Knowing which neighbors have supplies and skills helps your disaster response be timely, and allows everyone to contribute to the response in a meaningful way.
• Create a Neighborhood Map identifying the locations of natural gas and propane tanks for quick response if needed.
• Create a Contact List that helps identify those with specific needs such as elderly, disabled, or children who may be home alone during certain hours of the day.
• Work together as a team to evaluate your neighborhood during the first hour following a disaster and take the necessary actions.

The City of Shoreline provides each neighborhood facilitator with all the materials needed to host a Ready Neighborhood meeting, including a DVD to help run the meeting, a facilitator’s guide, informational packets for all participants, and additional support for getting prepared together.
This summer, find a way to set aside two hours to host or co-host a meeting for your neighbors. It’s a small investment for safety and peace of mind.

A plan to replace an asphalt plant and oil-tank farm on the shores of Puget Sound near Woodway with a development of housing and retail is generating fierce opposition in the neighboring town of Shoreline.

Cromell Park improvements starting soon

Starting in August, big changes will be happening at Cromwell park (the area that sits at the end of 180th/179th and Meridian and next to King County District Court building). According to the City of Shoreline website, improvements to the park will include "an irrigated field, new basketball court, wetland areas, new play equipment as well as an amphitheater and stage area."

Storm water improvements will also be made, and more paths and trails will be added.

It should be fun to see the progress and enjoy the new park when it's all finished! The scheduled completion date is in winter of next year, according to the city, so it will be some time before we can see the results. You can click here to see a PDF of the site plan.

The "Notes from the Napkin" blog has a review of the Phở Tic-Tac Vietnamese Restaurant in Shoreline. Here's an excerpt followed by a link to the full review:

I started with the Phở Noodle Soup Bowl with Brisket (the #16). I ordered the small, and you can see it was plenty. It’s served with another plate of bean sprouts, basil leaves still on the stalk, jalapeño slices, and a lime. I put in all of the jalapeños, but I just couldn’t fit in all of the bean sprouts. I also spooned in a bit of Hoisin sauce for some kick. It was a great flavor, and I have to say that I was a bit better with my chopped sticks and spoon this time around. This dish was our favorite of the evening.

Mayor Cindy Ryu re-elected as Director for Association of Washington Cities

SHORELINE - Shoreline Mayor Cindy Ryu was re-elected as a director of
the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) on June 26 at its annual
conference in Spokane.

Mayor Ryu was re-elected to the Western At-Large Position 1 on AWC’s
25-member Board of Directors. Mayor Ryu serves on the Federal
Legislative Relations and Membership Dues subcommittees.

“I am very grateful to the members of the AWC for these tremendous
opportunities to serve,” commented Ryu upon winning re-election. “By
actively participating in the AWC, the City of Shoreline will benefit
from the fresh ideas and regional perspectives of our sister towns and
cities across Washington State.”

Founded in 1933, AWC is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that
represents Washington’s 281 cities and towns before the Legislature
and state executive agencies. AWC enhances cities’ capacity to carry
out their responsibilities, improves communication and information
sharing, and helps local governments prepare for and manage change.

Ryu has served on the Shoreline City Council since 2006. On the
Council, she refined the Aurora Avenue Project in order to help local,
family-owned businesses thrive. Mayor Ryu helped neighbors save the
South Woods from development, and led the way in long-term policy
setting for the City through Shoreline’s Economic Development Plan and
Environmental Sustainability and Comprehensive Housing Strategies.

In 2008, fellow council members elected her Shoreline’s mayor. Mayor
Ryu is the first Korean-American woman to serve as mayor of any
American city in the history of the United States.

Ryu is up for re-election this year, and has pledged to, “…continue
fighting on behalf of Shoreline’s neighborhoods.” She has voted to
increase the public safety budget and put more police officers on the
beat and in our schools. Ryu has called for more open spaces and
parks – environmentally safe areas that can be enjoyed by Shoreline’s
families for years to come. In addition, she is advocating for
common-sense development of Shoreline’s commercial land use areas.

Making the Council’s work transparent and open to all Shoreline’s
residents has been a priority for her as a Councilmember and as
Shoreline’s mayor. Ryu said she “will always be a leader in keeping
an open Council, where people of Shoreline always have a seat at the
table and a voice in determining our future.”

Former Shoreline Superintendent Bill Stevenson dies; memorial set for July 29

William "Bill" Stevenson, who served as superintendent of the Shoreline School District from 1962 to 1982, died Thursday, July 9 of cancer at age 85.

Dr. Stevenson presided over a remarkable period of growth and change in the Shoreline Schools in 20 years as superintendent, which included the opening of Shorewood High School and Einstein Middle School. Enrollment in the district peaked at more than 18,000 students in 1970.

Stevenson may be best remembered for his leadership following a double-levy failure in 1971, when the District lost more than 20 percent of its funding. Stevenson, backed by the school board, closed six schools and reduced staff by more than 25 percent to help make up the gap. A year later, a new levy was passed and the District began to rebuild its programs. Stevenson and the school board were honored by the Washington State School Directors Association as its School Board of the Year in 1972 for its handling of the financial crisis.

Bill Stevenson was born February 22, 1924. He attended Bellevue High School, served as a Marine in the South Pacific during World War II, then graduated from Washington State University, ultimately receiving his doctorate in education from Columbia University in 1968. He first came to Shoreline as a teacher in 1950, and served as president of the Shoreline Education Association in 1953-54. He later became vice principal of Broadview Elementary School, which was then part of the Shoreline district. He served as the first principal of Cromwell Park Elementary in Shoreline from 1955 to 1959. He was to move to Lake Forest Park as principal in the fall of 1959, but was instead promoted to assistant superintendent. Stevenson became acting superintendent in 1962 and superintendent in 1963 upon the retirement of Dr. Ray Howard.

Dr. Stevenson was the recipient of many educational honors. He served as president of the Washington Association of School Administrators in 1975. In 1976, he was elected to the executive board of the American Association of School Administrators, and served as its president in 1981-82.

After 32 years in the Shoreline School District, Dr. Stevenson retired in 1982, after which he was elected to two six-year terms on the Washington State Board of Education. He also served on the board of the Shoreline Historical Museum.

Throughout his retirement, Dr. Stevenson continued to support the Shoreline Schools, leading the effort to write a history of the District’s first 60 years, 1944 to 2004.

“Cooperation, honesty, openness, effort, expertise, energy and desire to perform were hallmarks of the Shoreline family spirit,” Dr. Stevenson wrote in “Shore to Shore and Line to Line,” published in 2007. “Keeping the spirit alive is a goal to be forever pursued.”

Dr. Stevenson is survived by his sister Marilyn and brother Bob, his son, Rick and daughter, Jody, their spouses Julie and Gary and grandchildren Max, Maddy, Leah and Oliver. His wife of 62 years, Betty Jean, died in November 2008. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 29 at 1 p.m. at University Presbyterian Church, 4540 15th Ave. N.E. in Seattle.

SHORELINE –Wendy DiPeso, president of the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, today announced she is running as a write-in candidate for the Shoreline City Council, Position One, against incumbent Keith McGlashan.

"As the Chamber of Commerce President, I have worked tirelessly in bringing the City and the business community closer together so that we can create jobs and grow our local economy. I know what's needed to help our city's businesses grow and thrive. Unfortunately, the
incumbent does not."

DiPeso decided to run against McGlashan after he voted against the city's Business Licensing Program at the June 22 City Council meeting. The program, which passed the Council on a 5-2 vote, is a critical component of the city's economic development strategy. It will provide
the city's professional economic development manager with the information he needs to do his job. DiPeso is a staunch supporter of the program.

"Keith does not understand the need for economic development that benefits our families," said DiPeso. "I could not allow someone with such a clear lack of understanding of our local economy to run unopposed this year. The citizens of Shoreline deserve a choice."

An early resident in the Shoreline community around the turn of the century was Judge James Ronald. Ronald purchased five acres of land for $100 from a friend who owed him money. Working on the weekends, he cleared his tract and planted cherry and apple trees. Improving the land came naturally to him, he claimed, having been raised in the Deep South.

Judge Ronald was a friend of Fred Sander, the man who built the Interurban. Ronald gave right-of-way through his property for Sander's rail line and offered to build a small station house if he could name it. Sander agreed, and after the station was built, Ronald gave him a sign reading "Evanor," named for Ronald’s daughters, Eva and Norma.

Shortly thereafter, Judge Ronald was riding the train. He got off at his station and was shocked to see that its name had been changed to Ronald. Not wanting to see his name in a public place, he confronted Sander. Sander informed Ronald that he'd promised to name the station "Evanor" but not to keep the name.

Said Sander, "This is my railway and I change names of stations when I please. I have changed it to Ronald and if you don’t like that name you can stay away and not see it!" The name further ingrained itself into the community a few years later when Ronald donated land for a school building. The name of the building? Ronald School, now home to the Shoreline Historical Museum.

Help Shoreline prepare for future human services needs by attending and giving your input at a July 7 public meeting of the Shoreline Human Services Task Force, on Tuesday, July 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Shoreline Fire Department, 17525 Aurora Avenue N. (enter from Aurora, going southbound).

How has Shoreline’s population changed in the last 10 years? What does that mean for the future of human services in Shoreline?

Your knowledge of the community is needed to help the City of Shoreline interpret information about current human service needs in Shoreline as well as identify the most important trends and changes that will impact human services in the next 10 years.

Information presented and gathered at the upcoming July 7 Human Service Task Force Community Meeting will help shape how Shoreline’s 1998 Human Services Strategic Plan is updated and revised.

Attendees will learn about local human services needs like food insecurity, hunger and stresses on families. The problems and opportunities for improving services to two key groups – older adults and youth – will be discussed. Also learn how the population of Shoreline has changed in the last ten years and implications for the future.

Power outage at Central Market plaza

We have reports from our friends over at Pets Energy, next to Central, that something is up over in that plaza. Apparently earlier today, an alarm of some sort rang for around 30 minutes at the Market, and possibly the sprinkler too. The Market was closed, and neighboring Big Lots was also closed. As of around 7 pm there was no power in the entire plaza.

A Central Market employee let us know that there were power issues at one of the nearby banks which affected the entire mall. As of 8 pm, Central is still trying to bring up all their systems and expects to re-open shortly. However, because of the power outage, they won't be selling any perishables such as meats or cold deli items.

The Puget Sound Business Journal and the Seattle Foundation have named Shoreline's James Alan Salon as its Healthy Community Corporate Champion for Neighborhoods and Communities. Currently located at N 185th and Aurora, the Salon is known for its corporate and individual community service and giving. Employees and owner Matthew Fairfax support United Way, the Dale Turner YMCA, Shoreline Public Schools Foundation, Ryther Child Center, and Banchero Friends Services, as well as providing free haircuts to residents of Tent City, and to school children at the Back To School Consortium event.

In April, the James Alan Salon was also honored by the Shoreline PTA Council, with their Outstanding Business Award.

Breakfast at the Senior Center

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center is serving breakfast on Saturday and Sunday of the Shoreline Arts Festival, June 27 and 28, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in their building at the south end of the Shoreline Center at 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

The cost for adults is $5.00 and the cost for children under 12 is $4.00. The meals choices are: Scrambled eggs, pancakes or French toast, and ham, or sausage link. Also there is a choice of biscuits and gravy. You can have seconds of the pancakes or French toast.

The Thrift Shop will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. People might like to take an opportunity to see what treasures there are in the shop.

Amazon Fresh review

Since we covered the arrival of Amazon Fresh delivery in Shoreline here on the blog, I thought I'd try it out and let you know how it works. That, and the idea of having food delivered to your doorstep is magical in the way it only can be to someone who grew up after the era of glass-bottled milk and before Kozmo.com and Webvan.com had their brief moments of glory.

It's easy enough to shop on Amazon Fresh; like the main site, it anticipates, for example, that when you type "ground" you may well be looking for "ground beef." I decided to order about half our normal amount of groceries for this test, and included a variety of products, like toothpaste, half-and-half, strawberries, broccoli, lettuce, onions, avocados, yogurt and of course, ground beef. The minimum order is $30, and delivery costs $5, though after you've added $75 worth of products to your cart, delivery is free.

I didn't include any beer or wine, because you must be home to show ID, naturally; I wanted to try the "pre-dawn delivery" option because I was a bit enchanted by the idea of grocery elves visiting in the middle of the night.

And they did. Here's what was on our porch in the morning:

I had wondered if the delivery would be truly silent, or whether our very keen-eared dog would wake up and bark. Apparently the elves wear padded slippers, because none of us heard them arrive.

The containers are very large, which might not be apparent in the photos. There were three, and items were separated between them by the amount of coldness needed; one was insulated and included packs of dry ice, one was just packed with frozen ice packs, and one was simply empty except for a few items. It seemed like a lot of packaging, but of course these things are re-used over and over. The items inside came in thin plastic baggies within their containers.

Everything we received was as expected; the broccoli was fresh and firm, the strawberries, blueberries and blackberries were as good as what I'd have chosen myself at the store (and getting a package of strawberries with no bad ones is actually sort of rare, so that was a nice surprise).

Bridget the cat personally approved the tomatoes.

I should note that I placed this grocery order at 8:00 the evening before, and it came sometime before 6:00 this morning.

Overall, we're pretty pleased with this new shopping option; it's not always easy to get to the store after work, but you could certainly place an order during the day and have it arrive that evening or over night. Another plus was that I found myself much less tempted to impulse-buy. I knew what I needed, and wasn't tempted by the goodies you find while wandering around a store. Prices were about the same for most products, lower for some, higher for others; one negative feature is that by not wandering around a store, you don't see items on sale that you might want to stock up on. There is a sale section, but I didn't see much of interest there.

Another not-so-great thing is the size of the delivery containers. I had to stack ours on the back porch for now. You can request that Amazon come to pick them up right away, though, or just swap them out the next time you order.

Ron serves on the Executive Board of Puget Sound Regional Council This board has representatives for the counties of King, Snohomish, Pierce, and Kitsap.

Summer Meals program helps kids get good meals when school's out

This info comes from the ParentHelp123.org program, which helps Washington State families apply for health and food programs online, and locate resources in their local communities. They are part of the federal school nutrition program that provides free meals and snacks to kids and teens during the summer months, and also provides free money to buy food at grocery stores.

Their Summer Meals program is serving kids in the Shoreline area, and you can easily find Summer Meals sites in your zip code with this search tool. Sites in the area include the Bitter Lake Community Center, North Acres playground, and the North Seattle Family Center.

Right now, 98125 is in the lead, with 98101 tied with 98133 for second place. 98177, 98104, and 98155 are trailing considerably.

Curious about the Amazon Fresh service? Here's a review from a Capitol Hill blog describing their experiences. And if you'd like you can follow Amazon Fresh on Twitter; they sometimes offer coupons and specials.

A few things to be aware of, though; Amazon Fresh doesn't accept Amazon.com gift certificates, and you may not be able to get everything that you can pick up at, say, Central Market.

Local volunteers from "One Brick" working at Food Lifeline this Thursday evening

For only two hours, from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm on Thursday, June 18, One Brick Seattle volunteers will be spending some time at Shoreline's Food Lifeline to repack the bulk donations the organization receives and help provide food to more than 300 food banks and shelters in the Seattle area. At One Brick’s last Food Lifeline event, volunteers sorted, boxed and loaded up food for delivery. One Brick volunteers repacked more than 7,800 pounds of cabbage to provide more than 6,100 meals in the local community.

One Brick is a national non-profit volunteer organization chapter that just launched a Seattle chapter. One Brick does the work of connecting volunteers with local non-profit organizations and providing structured volunteer opportunities.

To date, One Brick has recruited more than 15,000 volunteers in six cities, including Seattle. Together, these volunteers have contributed more than 200,000 hours of service to their local communities. In 2008 alone, One Brick brought 54,000 hours to the communities it serves. And Lake City locals interested in helping out with the Food Lifeline event is encouraged to check out the One Brick web site and RSVP to attend the event or another upcoming informational meeting.

In addition to the upcoming clean up party, One Brick is a great organization and a good opportunity for locals to network, enjoy some social time and make a positive impact on their community.

It’s the emphasis on volunteering made easy that has made One Brick successful nationwide and we hope to continue that success in Seattle.
