Chamber President Wendy DiPeso to run for Shoreline City Council

DiPeso cites incumbent McGlashan's, vote against Shoreline's economy

SHORELINE –Wendy DiPeso, president of the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, today announced she is running as a write-in candidate for the Shoreline City Council, Position One, against incumbent Keith McGlashan.

"As the Chamber of Commerce President, I have worked tirelessly in bringing the City and the business community closer together so that we can create jobs and grow our local economy. I know what's needed to help our city's businesses grow and thrive. Unfortunately, the
incumbent does not."

DiPeso decided to run against McGlashan after he voted against the city's Business Licensing Program at the June 22 City Council meeting. The program, which passed the Council on a 5-2 vote, is a critical component of the city's economic development strategy. It will provide
the city's professional economic development manager with the information he needs to do his job. DiPeso is a staunch supporter of the program.

"Keith does not understand the need for economic development that benefits our families," said DiPeso. "I could not allow someone with such a clear lack of understanding of our local economy to run unopposed this year. The citizens of Shoreline deserve a choice."

In addition to serving as the Chamber President, DiPeso serves on the Economic Development Advisory Committee for the city of Shoreline. She is a Board member of the Sustainable Shoreline Education Association, has been active in the Chamber's Green Business Program, and is a long-time supporter of Shoreline's annual Solarfest.

Shari Tracey running for City Council seat

A fresh face will be among those vying for a seat on the Shoreline City Council in 2009. In December, Echo Lake neighborhood resident Shari Tracey signaled her intent to run for City Council by filing with the state's Public Disclosure Commission. She has not yet chosen which position she will be running for, but expects to make that decision in late February.

"I'm excited about the prospect of continuing to serve the citizens of Shoreline at the Council level and working collaboratively towards a shared vision of a great community," Tracey said. "Shoreline is on the threshold of many important decisions, and quality leadership will be crucial."

Tracey has been a Shoreline resident since 1992, and a long time active member of the community. As an advocate for local parks, Tracey was a driving force behind the popular Parks Bond that passed in 2006. In addition to being a member of Shoreline's Parks Board, Tracey serves on the city's Long Range Financial Planning Committee.

As a member of the Partnership for Youth Justice, Tracey serves on the diversion board to help Shoreline's youth who have committed misdemeanors. She is also a member of the Shoreline Rotary, a Board member of the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association and former board member of Richmond Little League.

Tracey, former chief of staff for a King County Councilmember, currently manages corporate events and special projects for a major law firm in Seattle.

Obama Volunteer to Challenge Ron Hanson

Shoreline, Wash. (April 18, 2009) Christopher Roberts, Obama Captain for the 32nd Legislative District during the 2008 election, filed Friday, April 17, 2009, to run for Shoreline City Council.

“President Obama has asked all Americans to start shaping our country’s future, and that through service to our communities and our neighborhoods, we will build a stronger nation,” said Roberts. “In this campaign, I answer this call to service – and together, we will work toward a stronger, more sustainable, future for the City of Shoreline.”

Roberts plans his campaign around three messages: strengthening civic engagement and participation in the Shoreline community, increasing transparency in Shoreline’s city governance, and encouraging small business development in Shoreline.

“The local Obama community strongly supports Christopher Roberts,” says local Obama captain Katie Rohs. “Throughout the 2008 campaign, he demonstrated his selfless commitment to the Shoreline community, and has encouraged others to follow Obama’s call to service.”

“Christopher is the right person for Shoreline,” says 32nd District Democrats Vice Chair Maryn Wynne. “His tireless dedication to the Democratic Party, and service on the Washington State Democratic Central Committee means that once he is on the City Council, bright things will happen for Shoreline.”

Roberts, 30, is a Comparative Law and Societies Scholar working on his dissertation in the Political Science Department at the University of Washington, and is a member of the City of Shoreline’s Human Services Strategy Task Force. His wife, Heather, is an Associate Faculty at Cascadia Community College.

City Council Business Meeting Agenda

This coming Monday, September 8th, at 7:30, the Shoreline City Council will hold its business meeting. The agenda is available online here, with a downloadable PDF of the entire agenda and recent meeting minutes available here (PDF).

Among the agenda items are a proclamation of Constitution Week, declaring September 17-23 to be that week, and a statement of thanks to the businesses and individuals who donated to support the recent Celebrate Shoreline event.

Also included in the 44-page PDF document are minutes from the July 21 study session, much of which was devoted to the Hamlin Park improvement project. If you live near or visit Hamlin Park, you might find this section of particular interest.

Shoreline City Council Business Meeting, July 28th

The Shoreline City Council will be meeting on Monday, July 28th, at the Shoreline Conference Center's Highlander Room. Now, if you're like me, you may have flipped the channel past these meetings on television from time to time; maybe you stop to see what's going on. Maybe you're more involved and actually attend the meetings. Maybe not. If not, you might think about going; there are usually topics discussed that affect all of us living in Shoreline, and the public is allowed to comment.

The meeting on the 28th will address issues including a mini-grant for the Meridian Park neighborhood, construction at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, the upcoming "National Night Out" on August 5th, and the "Celebrate Shoreline" event on August 12th.

You can download a complete agenda in PDF format here. It's pretty hefty; 128 pages, including minutes from recent meetings. Are you curious about what your neighbors and fellow Shoreline residents are saying at these meetings? The public commentary can make for quite interesting reading!

For example, I mentioned a neighborhood mini-grant earlier. I wasn't sure what that might be, exactly, but in the June 9th meeting minutes (part of that same agenda packet) I read that Patty Hale thanked the Council for grants that allowed her neighborhood to plant trees, develop a logo, and establish signage. They also funded playground equipment for Ridgecrest Elementary.

The Meridian Park requested mini-grant is $3,100, and is intended for three projects: signs and a banner to "raise neighborhood awareness of the newly rejuvenated Meridian Park Neighborhood Association," removal of blackberries and planting of native plants at Ronald Bog, and add new plants and bark at Meridian Park Elementary.

The agenda packet provides complete details on these projects, down to the $168 for locks to prevent people from stealing the signs. And there are several other projects addressed in the packet, some of which might concern your neighborhood. If you're curious, take a moment to download and read through the agenda, and if you feel like participating, you might want to go to the meeting. Decisions will be made which may directly affect your quality of life in the future!
