New public art in Echo Lake park
The sculpture in Echo Lake park is basically complete. Earlier today I sent an email to the artist, Stuart Nakamura, to ask him if the piece has a title and if he had anything he'd like to say to the residents of Shoreline, via the Ronald Bog blog. Here's what he wrote back:
The only remaining work is the landscaping which will be done this Wednesday and Thursday--electrical hookup to the integrated landscape lights will most likely be done later. The title is, "Contemplating the Arc," owing to the curvature in the design. The artwork is meant to be a place to sit and relax while in the company of the water and vegetation of Echo Lake. This park, while small in size, is just the right size for this kind of activity. Its location near the trail and out of the "basin" of the park was meant to save the largest part of the grassy area for more active usage. The copper painted steel "reeds" reflect wetlands nature of the park, the granite inlay design suggests the movement of water, and the natural stone provides an interesting texture to the piece.
Click the link below to learn more about this project, including how it was funded, and information about the artist, Stuart Nakamura. You can also see photos of the installation in earlier stages of construction.

Ironic "Beautification Project" sign near Echo Lake
The sign touts a beautification project, while right behind it a massive (some might say "ugly") construction project is going on. It's an interesting contrast is all I'm sayin'. This construction is happening on the south shore of Echo Lake, right next to the Interurban Trail.
Dare I say "beautification" meets "uglification"?
If you lived here, you'd be home now!

New public art coming to Echo Lake park
By golly, it's art!
And a close up of the artist's concept.I sent a note to Ros Bird with the City of Shoreline to see if he she could give me any further information about the project. Here's a slightly edited version of his her response:
Stuart Nakamura is the artist on this project having been selected through an open call and jury process about a year ago. Funding for the $20,000 commission is through the City of Shoreline’s 1% for Art Program and a City of Shoreline Neighborhood Mini-Grant to the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association. The installation will include seating as a place to reflect, read, chat with friends and view a bit of the lake, and will be visible from the trail as well as other parts of the park. It will be bermed in the back and have a couple of small lights embedded for nighttime security as well as ambience. Other materials are concrete, granite and steel. If the weather cooperates we expect the artwork to be completed in July.

What are they building at Echo Lake Park?
I just happened to be driving past Echo Lake park this afternoon and noticed that something weird-looking is being built there. I'll investigate and have more details soon.
