Kayu Kayu Ac Park Dedication June 9th

Shoreline’s Pump Station Park is getting a new name on June 9 along with a new play area, picnic tables and other improvements. The 2-acre park, located at 19911 Richmond Beach Drive NW, has been known as Richmond Beach Pump Station Park for many years. On Tuesday, June 9 at 6:00 p.m., it will be dedicated and renamed Kayu Kayu Ac Park.

The City went through a very specific process to name the new park. After asking the community for name suggestions, the City Council and the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) Board selected Kayu Kayu Ac, a common Native American term that was used to describe the Richmond Beach area as well as the native plant kinnickinick. The City enlisted the help of an elder of the Duwamish Tribe to honor the significant contributions to this area from the Native American community. The phonetic pronunciation of Kayu Kayu Ac is “Ki-U, Ki-U, Atch.”

Improvements to the park will soon be complete. They include a play area with swings, a viewing platform with interpretive panels describing railroad and boating activity in Puget Sound, picnic tables and a restroom.

Update: Construction at Richmond Beach Park, Jan 2009

Last November I posted some photos of the construction happening at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park in Shoreline. There's a lot going on. Improvements to the upper parking lots, remodeling of the walkway at the top near the entrance to the park, new (or repaired?) steps, etc. I took a few more photos today. You can definitely see progress since November.

The sign at the entrance to the park says the park is under construction through February 2009. Here are a few photos taken today. See more from today (and from November) by clicking the link below. By the way, the park is currently closed to cars, but you can still walk in.

Construction at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, November 2008

A couple of days ago I went down to Richmond Beach Park. It was late morning, overcast and foggy. Here are a few photos of what's going on down there. The old bottles were pretty cool to look at. I suppose they must have been excavated by the construction workers. I hope they were found by a bottle collector. If you click on the link below (to see more photos) you can see a close up of one of the bottles that I thought was particularly interesting.

The cannons of Hamlin Park

If you've ever been to Hamlin Park you've probably noticed that there are two rather large cannons right by the playground. They have informational plaques on them which indicate that they were used in the Battle of Manila Bay (in the Phillipines) during the Spanish-American War on May 1st, 1898. But there's no indication of why they're here in Shoreline WA. And how did they end up at Hamlin Park? Does anyone know?

A dog park in Shoreline?

This Thursday evening (June 12th, 7pm) there will be a "public presentation" concerning the recommendations of Shoreline's Off-Leash Dog Area Study Group. Find out which sites the group has identified and what their recommendations are.

I won't be able to make it to the meeting, but if you do go, please send me a note to let me know what happened and what was talked about. I'd love to be able to post something here about the results of the meeting. Thanks!
