Celebrate the continued success of Shoreline's first off-leash area. Activities for dogs and people include:

* Information about ShoreDog (Shoreline's non-profit community volunteer organization for off-leash areas.
* Facts about obedience training, the leash law, and license requirements, as well as off-leash area etiquette tips.
* Disc Dog demo; learn about playing frisbee with your dog!
* An on-site veterinarian to answer your questions.
* A Lucky Dog raffle and treats for humans and their pups.

Shoreline's first off-leash dogpark is open!

On Saturday morning, the Shoreview off-leash area had its ribbon-cutting and official dog-unleashing ceremony.

Mayor Cindy Ryu was there, as were Dick Deal, Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services; Doris McConnell, City Councilmember; and city council candidate Shari Tracey, along with many other people and their canine friends.

A good time was had by dogs and humans alike. We'll let the pictures speak for themselves!

Shoredog off-leash site opening in April! Work party next weekend

Are you a dog owner in or near Shoreline? You might know that Shoreline has had two off-leash areas approved, and one of them, Shoreview, near Shoreline Community College, will be opening in April!

ShoreDog, Shoreline's off-leash area stewardship group, is having a work party to introduce and clean up the Shoreview site. They'd love to invite local dog folks to come and meet each other, and help get the site ready. It's on Saturday, March 28th from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm – rain or shine!

Directions to the site: From Aurora Ave. head West on N. 160th and continue to Greenwood Ave. N. Turn right onto Greenwood, then take an immediate left onto N.W. Innis Arden Way. Follow Innis Arden to Shoreline Community College and then turn in at the 3rd drive on the right.

Come prepared to remove invasive plants (blackberry, scotch broom, etc), participate in general clean up of the site, and most importantly to have fun. Tools will be provided by the Shoreline Parks Department, but you will need to bring your own work gloves.

Please keep in mind that four-legged kids will need to remain on-leash as fencing has not been installed completely, while two-legged kids 17 and under will need to be accompanied/supervised by an adult. (Be aware, the City of Shoreline does not recommend bringing children under the age of 14 years to City-sponsored community service volunteer events.)

If you would like to have a name tag ready for you, please email volunteer@shoredog.org, and include your first name, last name and a fun adjective you’d use to describe yourself. If you can’t respond by the 25th, though, they’d still love to see you there.

Shoreline off-leash park pilot sites selected

Wednesday night, October 29th, the City of Shoreline held a public presentation announcing the two off-leash pilot sites selected by the Off-Leash Dog Area (OLDA) study group and approved by the Park Board on Oct. 23rd.

OLDA made their presentation including history of the project, the process and criteria they used, and their final recommendations (see below). The public then asked questions and made comments. Comment forms and a copy of the presentation will be posted on the City's site soon.

The two pilot sites are:

1. Richmond Beach Saltwater Park (South End) - originally the north end by the dunes was also proposed but only the south end has been selected for a pilot site. It is proposed that this site will be timed use. The timeframe that this site will be open for off-leash use has not yet been determined but it is likely to exclude the summer months.















2. Shoreview Park - this site was not one of the original "six most promising sites" selected because the SCC Greenwood lot was proposed. There have been ownership issues that prevent us from pursuing the Greenwood lot, so OLDA took a closer look at the Shoreview site (formerly used as parking for SCC and referred to as "the pit"). It is accessible from the Shoreview Parking lot by the tennis courts and also from the SCC parking lot. This will be more of a traditional style dog park.

Next Steps: The pilot sites will be presented to the City Council at their next meeting (Dec or Jan - date has not yet been determined) and environmental studies are currently in the works. City Councilmembers Janet Way and Doris McConnell were in attendance at the public presentation. If all goes well, Shoreview may open in Spring of 2009 and Richmond Beach in Winter of 2009.

Shoredog members were also present at the meeting and encouraged people to join their mailing list and become involved in their organization which will be the stewards of these sites. Shoredog will be hosting a field trip to the two sites on Sat. 11/22 at 11am, meeting in front of the Central Market Food Court.
