Presidential election polling via 7-11 coffee cups

Who will be our next president? Only 7-11's totally unscientific coffee cup poll knows for sure! Here's the deal - when you buy a cup of coffee in a certain size to-go cup (can people who use refillable cups vote? I don't know), you can choose between Obama, McCain or Undecided. For some reason they don't seem to be keeping track of how many people choose 'undecided.' I wonder why? Anyway, here are recent photos (and current results) from three 7-11s in Shoreline. Photos were taken this past week.

On 5th Ave, across from the Crest Theater:
Obama 49, McCain 24

On 185th, near the Police Station:
Obama 65%, McCain 35%

On 15th, a block or so south of Safeway:
Obama 99, McCain 31

The official website for this campaign claims that, in 2004, the 7-11 coffee cup poll tracked identically with published national election results! Will that happen again? Only time (and your vote) will tell.

Shoreline's Latino flavored 7-11

A few weeks ago I reported on the 7-11 in Shoreline's Ridgecrest neighborhood selling an unusual flavor of beer called Budweiser Chelada. I discovered that (according to Busweiser's press release) it is a flavor enjoyed by many Latino folks. In case you didn't see that earlier post and don't know what Budweiser Chelada is, it's beer mixed with clam juice and tomato juice. At any rate, I was thinking about that and how the store often plays Latino music in the parking lot and started wondering if perhaps there's a lot of Latino folks living in that area. Then, yesterday, I spotted this new display. Mexican snack cakes!

Sometimes just going to the local convenience store is an international adventure. :)

Beer + clam juice + tomato juice?

Budweiser Chelada

The 7-11 in Shoreline's Ridgecrest neighborhood (the 7-11 across the street from the Crest Theater) is selling what is possibly the most unusual flavor of beer I've ever heard of: Budweiser Chelada. It's Bud (or Bud Light) mixed with Clamato (which is clam juice mixed with tomato juice). I haven't tried it, so I can't say just how good it is. But I thought I should let everybody know where you can get it if you want it!

According to a press release on Budweiser's website: " Latinos, specifically those of Mexican descent, have been mixing beer with Clamato for decades" and "Due to their tremendous test market success, adults across the country are clamoring to enjoy this convenient, great-tasting drink." Clamoring? Really? The press release also includes this gem: "One look at the can and you know that this beer is the real thing – Budweiser and Bud Light mixed with authentic Clamato. This is a savory beer that will appeal to adult beer drinkers, particularly those who enjoy beer mixed with Clamato."

I have to say, it's a really entertaining press release. There's a link to the entire thing below.

Perhaps there's a large Latino population in the Ridgecrest neighborhood? It's not unusual to stop by this 7-11 and find that the store is blasting Latin music from its outside speakers.

Oh, one other thing. I noticed at the checkout counter that this store also sells grape flavored cigars. I wonder if those would go well with Budweiser Chelada?

Shoreline 7-11 sells winning lottery ticket

We have a winner! The 7-11 store at the corner of 185th and Stone Ave has a sign posted in their front window that says "Check your tickets!!!" If you bought a ticket at this store for the drawing last Saturday (July 26, 2008), you may have won $9,700,000. I hope the winner was a Shoreline resident. How cool would that be?
