MAD magazine editor speaks on censorship tonight (April 13th) at Shoreline Library

The Joy of Censorship

Presented by Joe Raiola
It only seems right that the library, with its mission to protect the tenets of intellectual freedom, should host this program. MAD magazine Senior Editor, Joe Raiola, takes an illuminating, satiric and at times disturbing look at America’s most hotly debated First Amendment issues. He also traces MAD’s colorful history from comic book to its emergence as a revolutionary satirical force.

The Joy Of Censorship revolves solely around core first amendment issues and the colorful history of MAD (which escaped extinction and avoided censors by transforming itself from a comic book to a magazine in 1955)

From Joe's website: The Joy Of Censorship includes a one-of-a-kind slide presentation spotlighting many of the MAD's most controversial, thought-provoking and outrageous covers and articles, followed with a lively Q+A and/or panel discussion.

Earth Day 5K April 19th at Paramount Park in Shoreline

The Shoreline, Earth Day 5k welcomes all runners, walkers, and kids to participate in our 5k and kids third of a mile fun run. At the end of the race each participant will receive a tree that they can bring home and plant. There will also be great prizes and lots of food for everyone at the end.

Living Wisdom School sponsoring Children’s Art Show March 9-20

A message from Chandi Holliman, Founder of the Living Wisdom School of Shoreline:

The Living Wisdom School of Shoreline is sponsoring a Children’s Art Show for the whole family and for Elementary art school educators. This is the fifth annual show for the school. Come meet the Artists!

The Living Wisdom School introduces many forms of creativity in its program as a means of stimulating artistic expression of concepts such as energy, light, and joy to which a child naturally responds, using the tools of color, line and texture to capture the manifest world.

New displays and presentations! “A walk in the world of the Living Wisdom School” This year our Staff Artist- in- Residence, Martia Denniston, is coordinating this very special event. You won’t want to miss this delightful presentation done for the very first time. If you are unable to attend the opening show , the art will be on display from March 9th - March 20th, 2009.

Shoreline's musical youth battle it out this Friday, Feb 27

This Friday is the Richmond Beach Youth Jam. Here's some information I got from their website:

The youth of Shoreline with musical aspirations will compete in the second annual “Richmond Beach Youth Jam,” on Friday, February 27, 6pm…till we’re done.

The event is sponsored by the Richmond Beach Community Association and will be held on the lower level of the Richmond Beach Congregational Church.

Winners will receive cash prizes donated by local merchants. The contest, which will feature musical performers and groups 18 years old or younger and living in Shoreline, will have a live audience, judges from the music industry, and professional sound.

Musical acts will be arranged into showcase segments (2-3 songs max), and judged according to categories. For example: best musicianship, most creative, best performance, etc.

Tickets for the show will be sold at the door for $2.50, and will be good for a raffle of musical goodies held during the show.

Concert to benefit The Pink Polka Dots Guild: Sat. Feb 21st, 2pm

The Brian Waite band presents 20,000 Volts Under The Sea, a rock 'n roll adventure. 100% of ticket proceeds and 10% of CD sales from this event will benefit The Pink Polka Dots Guild.

The concert takes place at Shorecrest Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 21, at 2 pm.

Dancing Pajamas(!) family concert at Shoreline Library on Tuesday, Feb. 17 2009

Beat the winter blues with a fun family concert by Northwest favorite Nancy Stewart. Children are invited to wear their pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal or blanket. Zydeco Valentine's Dance in Shoreline - Saturday, Feb. 14th

I heard about this event on 91.3fm KBCS, the radio station of Bellevue Community College. A web search turned up the following information from gatorboyproductions.com

Corey Ledet & Cedryll Ballou from Houston, TX (with Skye, Randy, and Tina from the Zydeco Locals) will be rockin' your Valentine's (and celebrating MaryLee, Deanna and Rita’s birthdays!), at Jay's Dance Experience Ballroom (18005 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133, above Highland Ice Arena), 8-11pm, $15. Free Zydeco dance lesson 7:30-8pm. Bring treats to share.

Cedryl puts on a show that you will talk about for a long time and Corey "Lil Pop" Ledet performed at the Liberty Theater June 4, 2005, dressed like the King of Zydeco, the late Clifton Chenier -- but more to the point, he played Clifton's legendary music with both skill and soul, producing a sound that invited the audience to close their eyes and imagine the King was himself once more on the stage. Corey and his band got a standing ovation.

Alex Kajumulo and Original Sound are raising money for local youth soccer with a reggae and Afro-beat music concert. 6pm at Fircrest.

Vagabond Opera performs in concert at 7:30pm at Shorecrest Performing Arts Center. Self-described as a combination of European Cabaret, Vintage Americana, Balkan Belly Dance, Neo-Classical Opera, and Old World Yiddish Theater.

Corner State performs at 7:30pm at Laughing Ladies Cafe in North City.


Sunday

Invitational Jazz Jam from 4-7pm at North City Bistro. The Bistro is offering Small Plates, Wines & Draft Beers at Special Prices.

Jazz Guitar Collective performs from 3-5pm at Laughing Ladies Cafe in North City. I've been told it's great to bring the kids there to hang out on a Sunday afternoon.

Shoreline musicians under the age of 18: Sign up now for the Richmond Beach Youth Jam

Attention musicians: Performers are now being accepted for the Richmond Beach Youth Jam! If you live in Shoreline, perform music or sing and are under the age of 18, this is your chance to show off your skillz, get a CD of yourself performing (using professional sound equipment), and have a chance at winning cash!

Entrance fee: $20

What happens next?
Participants perform before a live audience on February 27th, with professional sound equipment provided for the performance.

Help pick up litter on the Interurban Trail - Monday, Jan 19, 2009

On Monday, in honor of the 2009 Martin Luther King Day of Service some Shoreline residents are going to pick up litter along the Interurban Trail . You're welcome to join them!

Here's the information from the sign-up page at the USA Service website:

Interurban Litter Walk

The litter walk will start where the Interurban trail crosses 175th Ave, just off Aurora. Meet at the greenbelt, just north of 175th behind the Walgreens. The litter walk will head south, hopefully making it to the opening of the trail at 145th.

This event is meant to be child and dog friendly (please only bring your dog if s/he is okay around new people, especially children). Bring 1-2 plastic bags to fill with litter, gloves, water, sack lunch. Rain or shine. Dress accordingly, and come with a smile!

What: Help clean up the Shoreline section of the Interurban Trail

When: Monday, Jan 19 from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Where: Interurban Trail, just north of 175th, in Shoreline.

Directions: From 175th, head north on Midvale. There is parking for the trail in the northend of the Walgreen's parking lot. There is also street parking available.

Free Family Day at the new YMCA in Shoreline Sun. Jan 18

The (new) Dale Turner Branch of the YMCA, in cooperation with the City of Shoreline, is offering a free family day this Sunday, January 18, 2009, from noon until 5 pm.

Candy Cane Dash returns to Shoreline

Kick off this holiday season with a "dash" of sweetness by registering for the 5K Candy Cane Dash at Shoreline Stadium. All proceeds will go to the Shorecrest High School Cross Country Team.

The run/walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 13. Registration the day of the race begins at 8 a.m. and costs $25.

Free Comedy Night at Hotwire Coffee Shop: Dec 11th at 7:30pm

There is a fourth dimension of entertainment, beyond the morning drama and the dinner hour. It is a dimension as vast as our need for change we can believe in, as timeless as stories regarding religious officiators entering a drinking establishment. Something insightful, something delightful, something pretty, something witty... yes, COMEDY on a Thursday night!

This first-of-its kind holiday-season event launches what is expected to become a regular series of Thursday night performances at Hotwire. The Thursday night shows will feature many professionals that have performed at Seattle's Comedy Underground, Giggles, and Laughs in Kirkland.

The show will be hosted by Seattle-based comedian, Barbara Sehr, who has appeared on local stages, local television, and at clubs in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Atlanta.

Dedication ceremony at Ronald Bog park today at 5pm

The arboretum and new kiosk at Ronald Bog park will be dedicated this afternoon at 5pm.

Here's the text of an email from Amy Bryant of the Meridian Park Neighborhood Association:

Nestled in the northeast corner of Ronald Bog Park on N 175^th Street in Shoreline is an Arboretum boasting 25 species of native conifers. Since 1992, the Rotary Club of Shoreline has been planting and nurturing these trees not only to provide a special place for the community to enjoy, but to add a valuable environmental resource for local educators to share with their students

The Shoreline Rotary didn’t just stop with trees. Since the Club had adopted Ronald Bog Park, over the years it also enhanced the park with plantings and, most recently, a new kiosk.

On Monday, Oct. 13, the City of Shoreline is hosting a dedication to recognize the hard work Shoreline Breakfast Rotary has invested in Ronald Bog Park. The ceremony will be at 5:00 p.m. near the parking lot off N 175^th Street. Additional parking is available at Meridian Park Elementary School on the corner of Meridian Avenue N and N 175^th Street.

“Organizations such as Rotary with members who are dedicated to sharing their talents, time and resources with the community are a major reason Shoreline is a great place to live,” says Shoreline Mayor Cindy Ryu. “We are grateful they have adopted Ronald Bog Park as an ongoing project and are fortunate to have them in the Shoreline community.”

The Arboretum project began in 1992 to celebrate International Rotary’s theme of environmental projects. Shoreline Rotary originally planted 10 each of 16 species of conifers with the help of Shorewood High School students.

The project followed Shoreline Rotary President Mike Rancich when he helped form the Shoreline Breakfast Rotary in 1994. Over the years, the Club maintained the Arboretum, adding trees to cover attrition and enhancing the park with other plantings including adding 2,500 bulbs around the picnic shelter and other areas.

Rancich and Dick Nicholson led the most recently completed project that added nine more species of Pacific Northwest conifers, an interpretative kiosk and a permanent trail with financing from Shoreline Breakfast Rotary, Rotary District 5030 and the City of Shoreline.
