Tom Stoppard (award-winning playwright and screenwriter of Shakespeare in Love and Empire of the Sun) authored this comic masterpiece that retells the story of Shakespeare's HAMLET from backstage, focusing on two of the famous play's most insignificant characters.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are college friends of the Prince of Denmark. They find themselves called to court by King Claudius to explain Hamlet's strange behavior after the suspicious death of his father.
Wandering aimlessly backstage, they view the story of HAMLET from a new perspective & ask the big questions: Are we powerless bystanders? Or can we have an effect on the world?

Doing anything this weekend? How about a cat show?
The Average Joe Cat Show is this Saturday at the Shoreline Conference Center, sponsored by Purrefct Pals cat rescue. The show is "a cat show for family cats" which means your kitties doesn't need papers or medals, just personality. There will be awards for Biggest Feet, Softest Fur, Scrappiest Looking, Monster Cat, and more. Really, how can you pass this up?
There will also be cat adoptions, behavior experts, a silent auction, and other cat-related events. There's even a photo contest, so send in your great cat pictures!

Shoreline's first off-leash dogpark is open!
On Saturday morning, the Shoreview off-leash area had its ribbon-cutting and official dog-unleashing ceremony.
Mayor Cindy Ryu was there, as were Dick Deal, Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services; Doris McConnell, City Councilmember; and city council candidate Shari Tracey, along with many other people and their canine friends.
A good time was had by dogs and humans alike. We'll let the pictures speak for themselves!

Shoreline's first off-leash dogpark opens this Saturday
And everyone is invited to come to the ribbon-cutting ceremony! According to an email from the City of Shoreline, Shoreline residents collectively own over 12,000 dogs according to estimates by King County Animal Control. Beginning this Saturday these Shoreline dogs and their owners will have a place for romping and socializing as the City of Shoreline opens the first of two planned off-leash dog areas.
Join the celebration Saturday, April 25, at 10:00 a.m. at Shoreview Park as the City of Shoreline dedicates and opens the Shoreview Off-leash Dog Area. The dog area located at 320 Innis Arden Way is to the east and up the hill from the Shoreview tennis courts, in the southeast corner of the park. It can be accessed from the Shoreview parking lot off Innis Arden Drive or from the Shoreline Community College parking lot by entering through the driveway that is furthest west. Then follow the signs.

Poetry Month Celebration in Shoreline on Friday April 24th 2009
The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council will celebrate National Poetry Month with their second annual Poetry Month Celebration on Friday, April 24, 2009.
The event is co-sponsored by Shoreline Community College and will be held at the Campus Theater. Enjoy an intimate and inspiring evening of readings by regional published poets Kim-An Lieberman, Kathleen Flenniken, and Ed Harkness as well as the student and adult winners of our annual Poetry Month Contest.

Shari Tracey running for City Council seat

A fresh face will be among those vying for a seat on the Shoreline City Council in 2009. In December, Echo Lake neighborhood resident Shari Tracey signaled her intent to run for City Council by filing with the state's Public Disclosure Commission. She has not yet chosen which position she will be running for, but expects to make that decision in late February.
"I'm excited about the prospect of continuing to serve the citizens of Shoreline at the Council level and working collaboratively towards a shared vision of a great community," Tracey said. "Shoreline is on the threshold of many important decisions, and quality leadership will be crucial."
Tracey has been a Shoreline resident since 1992, and a long time active member of the community. As an advocate for local parks, Tracey was a driving force behind the popular Parks Bond that passed in 2006. In addition to being a member of Shoreline's Parks Board, Tracey serves on the city's Long Range Financial Planning Committee.
As a member of the Partnership for Youth Justice, Tracey serves on the diversion board to help Shoreline's youth who have committed misdemeanors. She is also a member of the Shoreline Rotary, a Board member of the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association and former board member of Richmond Little League.
Tracey, former chief of staff for a King County Councilmember, currently manages corporate events and special projects for a major law firm in Seattle.

Shoreline, Wash. (April 18, 2009) Christopher Roberts, Obama Captain for the 32nd Legislative District during the 2008 election, filed Friday, April 17, 2009, to run for Shoreline City Council.
“President Obama has asked all Americans to start shaping our country’s future, and that through service to our communities and our neighborhoods, we will build a stronger nation,” said Roberts. “In this campaign, I answer this call to service – and together, we will work toward a stronger, more sustainable, future for the City of Shoreline.”
Roberts plans his campaign around three messages: strengthening civic engagement and participation in the Shoreline community, increasing transparency in Shoreline’s city governance, and encouraging small business development in Shoreline.
“The local Obama community strongly supports Christopher Roberts,” says local Obama captain Katie Rohs. “Throughout the 2008 campaign, he demonstrated his selfless commitment to the Shoreline community, and has encouraged others to follow Obama’s call to service.”
“Christopher is the right person for Shoreline,” says 32nd District Democrats Vice Chair Maryn Wynne. “His tireless dedication to the Democratic Party, and service on the Washington State Democratic Central Committee means that once he is on the City Council, bright things will happen for Shoreline.”
Roberts, 30, is a Comparative Law and Societies Scholar working on his dissertation in the Political Science Department at the University of Washington, and is a member of the City of Shoreline’s Human Services Strategy Task Force. His wife, Heather, is an Associate Faculty at Cascadia Community College.

Citizens for Shoreline Schools survey concerning the upcoming School District 'Maintenance and Operations' Levy
This is a different survey than the one posted previously concerning budget cuts.
The Citizens for Shoreline Schools is conducting a survey in order to gather information from the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park community concerning the upcoming Shoreline School District Maintenance and Operations Levy(M&O). It is also possible that there will be a levy to support access to technology in the classroom and a possible bond issue to pay for the reconstruction/remodel of Shorewood and Shorecrest High Schools.

In response to the Washington State legislature’s unprecedented proposed reduction in K-12 funding for 2009-11, the Shoreline School District is anticipating the need to significantly reduce expenditures for next year. Due to the reductions that have already been made over the past three years and the restoration of an ending fund balance necessary to provide fiscal stability and secure a strong bond rating, Shoreline is in a better position than many surrounding districts. However, cuts are inevitable for the coming school year and will be difficult.
When Shoreline receives its final notification of next year’s allocation, we will have limited time to construct a balanced budget. We would like to incorporate your input and opinions on budget priorities. Please take a few minutes and share your opinions about overall budget priorities for the Shoreline School District.

Hopelink's “End Summer Hunger” Program Feeds Low-Income Kids
Did you know that when school is out for the summer, many of the 11,000 children in north and east King County who receive free or reduced cost meals during the school year may go hungry? Want to know how you can help?
This is from a press release sent to us by Hopelink:
Hopelink, the largest social services agency serving east and north King County launched its annual “End Summer Hunger” fund and food drive in April. Presenting sponsor Expedia invites community groups, schools, businesses and our neighbors throughout the area to join in now through August and do their part to ease hunger and homelessness among our communities’ children and families.
Families made 23 percent more visits to Hopelink’s food banks between September and December 2008 than the same period in 2007. Considering the rapidly growing number of families in financial distress due to the economy and seeking help from Hopelink, this campaign is more important than ever in ensuring Hopelink’s ability to feed hungry children.
The "End Summer Hunger" campaign began April 1 and ends August 31, and seeks support from schools, individuals, businesses, and organizations. This program is particularly important because donations to Hopelink historically drop during the summer, leaving the agency’s food banks with lower than normal supplies. Schools that support the program encourage children in classrooms to collect coins, while businesses, organizations and civic or community clubs hold food drives, fund drives, or both, according to what works best for them.

Earth Day at Central Market & Pets Energy
If last year's events are any indication, there will probably be a very large celebration of Earth Day this Saturday at Central Market.
They will be hosting the "Earth Day Every Day" event:

Make a difference throughout the year. Learn about new eco-living tips and tools for the home and yard. This year take home these earth-friendly products that minimize the amount of pollutants and chemicals released into soils and waterways:
• kitchen compost pail and compostable bags
• 15 lb. bag of worm castings
• Simple Green 2 oz. car wash soap and a Brown Bear car wash coupon

Another event will be held at the nearby pet supply store, Pets Energy. They'll have the Humane Society's "MaxMobile" and Washington Basset Rescue as well as several food vendors giving away samples of their ware, on Saturday April 18, starting at 11 (MaxMobile arriving about 2).
If you've never seen the Basset Rescue, and are fond of the floppy hounds, you're in for a treat! And Starkey here is up for adoption, so maybe you can meet him too.

"The Joy of Censorship" at Shoreline Library on April 13th 2009

Joe Raiola, senior editor for MAD MagazineIf you didn't make it to Shoreline Library last night you missed a very entertaining and informative presentation by Joe Raiola. Joe is a senior editor at MAD Magazine and he gave a talk called "The Joy of Censorship."
There were about 80 people in the audience. The room was pretty much full. Before the presentation we enjoyed cookies and coffee and everyone got a free issue of the latest MAD Magazine (the 500th issue!)
Joe talked about censorship in the United States and the history of MAD Magazine. Turns out MAD Magazine first came into existence because of censorship - it's an interesting story. There was a little music (Joe sang a blues song called "I put the prophet in a pancake"), a slide show presentation, and a Question and Answer session. Then Joe hung around afterward to talk to people individually, pose for photos, and sign autographs.
It was an informative and entertaining evening of rollicking, free-speech fun!
