Old site of Aurora Rents (175th & Aurora) now a vacant lot

Aurora Rents moved further up Aurora Ave earlier this year. Now the southeast corner of Aurora and 175th is a vacant lot. What will become of it?

  1. It's to make way for the Aurora Corridor project, then it's supposed to rebuild there.

  2. Yeah, I thought it was coming back.

  3. Aurora Rents has moved to the old Sleep-Aire location on Aurora at 192nd, near the new Echo Lake development (apartments, YMCA).

  4. Here's another person who thought it was coming back there. I don't know where I got the information, though -- maybe right here.

  5. I rented something there the other day and was told that they'd be back at the original location in a couple of years.

  6. Looks absolutely great as an open space. Hope he new building can be located as far South as possible on that property, or better yet at another nearby location.

  7. The old Aurora Rents building had to come down to make way for the widening of Aurora. You'll also notice the changes to Key Bank, across the street. They took off the front of their building and added on to the back.

Aurora Rents has been given permission to use their part of the "Red Brick Road". They will construct a new building on their old site and preserve the "Red Brick Road" as it is, but probably for parking.

In the meantime, they are leasing the old mattress factory at 192nd & Aurora and (thankfully) still doing business in Shoreline. They are a fine, local business and I am pleased they were not forced to move out of the city.

  8. They're a fine enough business, but the people who live within walking distance of that area would appreciate some businesses that they can actually enjoy walking to; a nice restaurant, a pub, some shops, that sort of thing.

Car dealerships and tool rental places belong farther from suburban neighborhoods, and things people want to walk to belong closer, especially if we want to encourage people to walk more and use their cars less often. This is bad planning on the part of the city.

  9. I rent things there a few times a year and am always glad that they are in the neighborhood.

  10. There is no absolute guarantee that the bricks will be preserved, the convenants can be removed at the discretion of the city manager. Then Aurora Rents will be obligated to pay the remaining amount between the discounted 25% price paid below market rate (due to the covenants - which were offered by Aurora Rents) and the full market rate.

Don't believe me, then read the staff report online for the Shoreline City Council and the minutes when they are available.

There is no guarantee that Aurora Rents will relocate to the exact location either, but it is theirs now, to build on as they see fit.

  11. It would be fantastic if the space were to be made into something a little more neighborhood friendly. I agree with above post. Aurora Rents is typically a place you have to drive to. Are they planning on adding proper sidewalks along Aurora in this area? Anyone know?
