Around the Sound community band

Do you play an instrument, and wish you had some folks to jam with? Did you play once, long ago, and want to get your skills back up? Or do you just enjoy happy brass band music? You may want to check out the Around the Sound community band here in Shoreline.

Since 1999, members of the Around the Sound band have been meeting to practice and play concerts in the area. They’ve played the North City Tree Lighting ceremony, holiday concerts at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, and at retirement homes, civic celebrations, and parades, and you'll be able to see them performing at the Shoreline City Hall opening coming up on October 10th.

And if you want to play in the band, you'll find it's open to all adults, no audition needed. The band is headed by Michael Alstead, Executive Director of Music Center of the Northwest, who has been playing the trumpet for over 40 years.

Shoreline stand-off

By now, you've probably heard about the police stand-off that occurred overnight in Shoreline. According to news reports, it started around six in the evening, when a man in a house near 150th and Densmore was reported to be threatening family members and friends with knives. He barricaded himself in the home when police contacted him, and when officers tried to enter the house, fired a shot.

Ready Neighborhood - Map Your Neighborhood!

The City of Shoreline encourages you to coordinate with your immediate neighbors - within a block - to get “ready” so you can help each other during a disaster.

One of the City’s goals is to get neighborhoods prepared as a Ready Neighborhood – ready in case of emergency or natural disaster. To accomplish readiness they use a tool called Map Your Neighborhood. The State of Washington Department of Emergency Management created this “mapping” tool to have a consistent way of preparing neighborhoods across the state.

Map Your Neighborhood is a 90 minute meeting in which neighbors on a block come together to:

 Learn the 9 steps to take immediately following a disaster
 Develop an “inventory” of neighborhood skills and equipment e.g. who’s a nurse, who owns a chain saw
 Map the neighborhood and identify areas of concern such as locations of gas meters
 Verify which neighbors need extra help in a disaster such as the elderly, those with a disability, or children who may be home alone.

An instruction booklet is available to lead you through the mapping tool, or the City has trained volunteers to help lead the meeting.

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council Launches 2009-10 Readers’ Theater Season

It’s time to mark your calendars for the 2009-10 Readers’ Theater season, where actors read new local plays and the audience weighs in afterwards. The series is now in its ninth year.

This season offers something for everyone. Topics range from cell phone addiction to Flower Children, from unemployment to the TV rumor mill. In a true story, one woman explores her struggle with chronic illness.

The lineup includes plays by regional authors Stefani Priest, Cheryl Victoria Richardson, Nicola Pearson, John Ruoff, Leonard Goodisman and George Savage Jr.

All readings are 7 p.m. Monday nights at Shoreline Center and are free. After the show, audience members share ideas on the script with the playwright and enjoy cookies and coffee. The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council sponsors the series.

“Between You and Me” by Stefani Priest
This lively collection of monologues and short pieces delves into unemployment, the loneliness of summer camp, cell-phone dependence, the gossip mill at a beauty parlor and ladies who lunch.

Double feature:
“One Woman with Multiple Sclerosis” by Cheryl Victoria Richardson
“The Messenger” by Nicola Pearson

In “One Woman with Multiple Sclerosis,” Richardson uses poetry, improvisation, dance and music to present her personal battle with multiple sclerosis. Her work shows the strength and hope of a young woman who refuses to let disease get the best of her.

In “The Messenger,” a talk-show host mentions casually that his answering machine is sending messages from God about a coming disaster. The play examines the power of TV to create controversy.

7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22
“An Anonymous Legend,” by John Ruoff
Ruoff’s play transports the audience back to the hippie era, as a group of Flower Children are re-united when one of them gets out of rehab.

7 p.m. Monday, March 22
“Herstory-Equal Rights: How the West Was Really Won" by Leonard Goodisman
Set in Laramie, Wyoming in 1868, the lawlessness of cowboys is pitted against the women who had the courage to fight them. The play is based on the true story of Louisa Ann Sawin, who at age 77 led a struggle for women’s rights.

7 p.m. Monday, April 25
“The Mules of Dry Diggins” by George Savage Jr.
Based on history, this imaginative work spins the tale of a group of would-be-world-famous robbers called "The Rattlesnake Dick Gang." The gang’s leader is harmless, but its members may not be.

Shoreline’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Shoreline’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
The City of Shoreline and the Shoreline Fire Department jointly offer advanced community education so individuals will be better prepared to help themselves and those around them when a disaster occurs.

Offered once or twice a year, the CERT class is 21 hours of training focused on disaster preparedness for specific hazards that may impact the Shoreline area. It includes training in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. CERT members can then use their training to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. In addition to the CERT baseline training, those who have completed the class are given the opportunity to become a Registered Emergency Disaster Worker as a member of the Shoreline Community Emergency Response Team. Members are offered additional on-going training and can be called upon to support the City’s efforts during an emergency with activities like shelter operations, sandbagging, distribution of public information and support of the Emergency Operations Center. The team meets periodically to plan for training and events and are organized as a non-profit organization.
The next Shoreline CERT class will be Tuesdays and Thursday, 6:30-9:30 pm, September 22, 24, 29, October 1, 6 and 8. Classes are taught at Shoreline Fire Department Training Center at 17525 Aurora Ave N.

"School Tools for Kids in Need" Program-helping to fill the school supply needs for children in the Puget Sound area.

WHAT: Bartell Drugs and World Vision launches the 6th Annual "School Tools for Kids in Need" program to collect school supplies for children in need at all 56 Bartell Drug locations now through August 30.

THE NEED: This school supply drive is especially important as 58,000 local children would
begin the school year without the basic school supplies needed to succeed if it weren't for this much needed program. Teachers, whose students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program, are able to "shop" for school supplies for these children, all free of charge.

Watermark Credit Union Pet Food Drive
Donations accepted until August 28, 2009

Watermark Credit Union is collecting pet food for The Humane Society for Seattle/King County. They are accepting donations of dog and cat food as well as new pet supplies, toys and blankets from August 10 through August 28. Donations will be accepted at all Watermark branches. Make a donation and you can display your pet’s photo in the lobby!

The Seattle Humane Society provides pet food to thousands of low-income seniors and people disabled by AIDS. While all donations will be accepted, the greatest need is for dry cat food. They also ask that we avoid pouches of wet food or soft pack items as they break open easily in storage.

Watermark is on Aurora & 163rd, on the east side of the street. If you are coming from the north, there's a convenient U turn into the business access lane. It's the distinctive building with the glass front and the steeply slanted roof - built by Shoreline's SGA construction company.

The annual North City Jazz Walk is Tuesday, August 11th, from 7 - 10 p.m in the North City neighborhood of Shoreline. This summer, become a Ready Neighborhood!

In an emergency, we all know to call 9-1-1. But in a disaster, our city’s first responders will be overwhelmed with requests for help. Your actual first responders will most likely be your family members and your neighbors. After a disaster such as an earthquake, your neighborhood may have gas lines leaking, live electrical wires down, trees fallen on houses, a neighbor with disabilities may need help . . . and 9-1-1 phones are jammed or dead. How you respond within the first hour after a disaster can significantly reduce injury, loss of life, and property damage.



Are you ready?
Become a Ready Neighborhood using the “Map Your Neighborhood” (MYN) tool. MYN is a program designed to help neighbors prepare together for disasters.
MYN will help you to:
• Learn the “9 Steps to Take Immediately Following a Disaster” to secure your home and to protect your neighborhood. It is hard to think clearly following disaster and these steps will help you to quickly and safely take actions that can minimize damage and protect lives.
• Identify the Skills and Equipment each neighbor has that would be useful in an effective disaster response. Knowing which neighbors have supplies and skills helps your disaster response be timely, and allows everyone to contribute to the response in a meaningful way.
• Create a Neighborhood Map identifying the locations of natural gas and propane tanks for quick response if needed.
• Create a Contact List that helps identify those with specific needs such as elderly, disabled, or children who may be home alone during certain hours of the day.
• Work together as a team to evaluate your neighborhood during the first hour following a disaster and take the necessary actions.


The City of Shoreline provides each neighborhood facilitator with all the materials needed to host a Ready Neighborhood meeting, including a DVD to help run the meeting, a facilitator’s guide, informational packets for all participants, and additional support for getting prepared together.
This summer, find a way to set aside two hours to host or co-host a meeting for your neighbors. It’s a small investment for safety and peace of mind.

Outdoor movie night - E.T.

The Ballinger Neighborhood is sponsoring a free Outdoor Movie Night on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Aldercrest Annex, 2545 NE 200th Street.

Bring a blanket or a lawn chair to this fun event for the whole family. Pre-movie entertainment will be provided by Community Rhythm Jams followed by the feature movie at dusk, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.

This event was funded by the City of Shoreline Neighborhood Mini-Grant Program.

Pt. Wells issue reported on by Seattle Times

"Shoreline neighbors say Point Wells 'urban center' proposal tramples their beach-side turf"

An article in today's Seattle Times reports on the Pt. Wells brouhaha:

A plan to replace an asphalt plant and oil-tank farm on the shores of Puget Sound near Woodway with a development of housing and retail is generating fierce opposition in the neighboring town of Shoreline.

Cromell Park improvements starting soon

Starting in August, big changes will be happening at Cromwell park (the area that sits at the end of 180th/179th and Meridian and next to King County District Court building). According to the City of Shoreline website, improvements to the park will include "an irrigated field, new basketball court, wetland areas, new play equipment as well as an amphitheater and stage area."

Storm water improvements will also be made, and more paths and trails will be added.

It should be fun to see the progress and enjoy the new park when it's all finished! The scheduled completion date is in winter of next year, according to the city, so it will be some time before we can see the results. You can click here to see a PDF of the site plan.

Review of Phở Tic-Tac Vietnamese Restaurant in Shoreline

The "Notes from the Napkin" blog has a review of the Phở Tic-Tac Vietnamese Restaurant in Shoreline. Here's an excerpt followed by a link to the full review:

I started with the Phở Noodle Soup Bowl with Brisket (the #16). I ordered the small, and you can see it was plenty. It’s served with another plate of bean sprouts, basil leaves still on the stalk, jalapeño slices, and a lime. I put in all of the jalapeños, but I just couldn’t fit in all of the bean sprouts. I also spooned in a bit of Hoisin sauce for some kick. It was a great flavor, and I have to say that I was a bit better with my chopped sticks and spoon this time around. This dish was our favorite of the evening.
